Poultry Production Basics
Poultry farming is the process of raising domesticated birds such as chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese for the purpose of farming meat or eggs for food. At A-U Farms, we focus on high-yield broiler and layer production.
Broiler Production
Raised specifically for meat. At 6-8 weeks, they reach market weight with proper nutrition.
Layer Production
Raised for egg production. They begin laying around 18-20 weeks of age.
Breeds Classification
Choosing the right breed is critical for farm success. We recommend breeds adapted to the Nigerian climate.
| Category | Recommended Breeds | Key Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Layers | Isa Brown, Harco | High egg production, heat tolerant. |
| Broilers | Ross 308, Cobb 500 | Rapid growth, excellent meat conversion. |
Disease Management
Prevention is better than cure. Biosecurity is the foundation of a healthy farm.
Biosecurity Checklist:
- Restrict visitor access to pens.
- Use foot baths at every entrance.
- Maintain strict sanitation schedules.
- Promptly isolate sick birds.
Vaccination Guidance
Standard vaccination schedule for layers and broilers in Nigeria.
- Day 1: Mareks Disease & IB (Hatchery)
- Week 1/2: Gumboro (IBD) First Dose
- Week 3: Newcastle Disease (LaSota)
- Week 4: Gumboro Second Dose
Housing Systems
Modern poultry housing ensures optimal bird comfort and productivity.
Deep Litter System
Cost-effective for small to medium scale. Birds roam on wood shavings.
Battery Cage System
Highly efficient for large-scale egg production. Professional management is easier.
Feed & Nutrition
Nutrition accounts for 70% of production costs. Balanced diets are non-negotiable.
Starter Mash
High protein (20-22%) for rapid early development.
Grower Mash
Moderate protein for skeletal development.
Finisher/Layer Mash
Tailored for meat gain or calcium for eggshells.
Fishery Management
Aquaculture success depends on water quality and seed (juvenile) health. We specialize in Catfish and Tilapia systems.
Water Quality
Maintain pH between 6.5-8.5. Ensure high dissolved oxygen levels for rapid growth.
Feeding Protocol
High-protein floating pellets for fingerlings, transitioning to sinking pellets as they grow.
